English is a Latin-based language and it is used in different parts of the world. This means the language has imported a lot of words, examples being locale which comes from French, Safari which comes from Swahili, and zombie which comes from an African language. The imported words and the original English words give the language between 500,000 and 1,000,000 words. However, an 'active' English vocabulary for a college graduate is around 60,000 words. There are several reasons why you should build your vocabulary.

The most obvious advantage of building vocabulary is that it prevents you from speaking like an idiot because if you do, people will treat you like one. This might not be right because it is a form of prejudice, but that is how our society is. You should build vocabulary because people will respect you more if you do. A good vocabulary increases your chances of success in the workplace since you will be articulate and eloquent which gives you an air of education and intelligence and it will even give you greater success in your social life. A good vocabulary means you will eliminate such noises as 'uhh' and 'umm', leading to better verbal communication flow and the projection of an intelligent image.

You should build your vocabulary because self-expression by humans is mostly done through words (as high as 90% of the time). This means you will not be able to communicate your thoughts and ideas well and you will not understand what others are saying if you do not have a good vocabulary. A good vocabulary ensures that you know what is going on around you since you will understand news items through comprehension and through reading. This is important because it opens up your mind and enhances your creativity.

Building vocabulary ensures that you understand the course content and that you understand it easily. You should build vocabulary because it will give you greater success in your exams and assignments. Whether you are writing your term paper, your assignment, or a project proposal in your workplace, your work will get greater acceptance if you use the right vocabulary since this is proof that you understand and you are knowledgeable in what you are writing about. Having a good vocabulary opens such doors as becoming a book writer, a translator if you have a second language, a playwright, or a screenplay writer. A good vocabulary helps you become better at scrabble, crossword puzzle, and similar games. You could make good money playing such games.

Another advantage of building vocabulary is that it increases your self-confidence since you will shed the label of 'less intelligent', 'less interesting', and 'less capable'. This will help you in your social life and in the workplace. You have no excuse not to build vocabulary since there are many methods of building a good vocabulary, among them reading books and wordbooks, reading dictionaries, filling puzzles, playing word games such as scrabble, learning a new skill such as gardening to understand the relevant lexicon, using an online vocabulary builder, writing and going through previously-learnt words to memorize them.
