The croquet set can be viewed as a competitive sport where people compete seriously for prizes. It was even played in the Olympics once. It can also be viewed as a recreational activity or among known garden games that people play in their backyards. Many people have adopted the game in their homes because of its almost passive nature. Many family games don’t require large spaces or lots of energy to play. The croquet set affords families the chance to get involved in a leisure activity or pastime that leaves them refreshed and energized. Even though the sport’s popularity dropped some years ago, it is starting to regain the admiration it used to have.

Both as competitive sport and as garden games, they began to get popular in the late eighteen hundreds. Croquet made it to the Olympic Games but was later dropped. This was due to the fact that countries could not agree on the rules. American croquet set associations played by different rules from what European associations played. This created some conflicts on how rules are to be applied, not at family games, but at the international level.

The game left the high level sporting arena and was only left to be played along other garden games by small clubs and groups of the game’s followers. It was played in family games for recreation and in parks. Still in the recreational setting, croquet continued to have had affection of adherents. Croquet set societies and fan clubs were set up in the countries where it was actively played.

By the nineteen seventies, croquet set began regain the ground it had lost. The game’s clubs in the United States decided to compete with each other and reached an agreement on official rules. Where garden games were played, the game was played competitively. Though family games could still be played, people now had the choice of visiting the local stadium to watch the play.

With official rules in place and an association to govern playing games, the game went competitive again. Since the nineties we have seen the croquet set grow from a game played as garden games to being played by thousands of professional players especially in America. Along family games, local, national and international tournaments are often held.

Still the game is unknown to many people especially in the competitive games level. Many people are still playing games in the level of family games not aware that they are now played professionally. There is a world governing body for croquet’s administration along with the game’s national associations in many countries all over the world. With time, different rules have developed for croquet set. The type of game played in garden games requires different rules than that played in clubs and tournaments professionally. The playing grounds also differ in many ways for both types of games. The lawns for professional and club play are neatly trimmed while family games are played on whatever grass is there in the backyard, provided there is space.
